Some people think that travelling abroad costs a fortune. But the truth is that travelling overseas doesn’t have to be that expensive. Of course if you want to live it up with a luxury lifestyle in a foreign country, it will cost a lot, but that isn’t really travelling. Travelling means that you will meet the people and experience the culture of foreign lands, because that’s where you’ll grow and really experience what life has to offer.

Travelling can cost much less than you may think, by hunting down cheap flights, bunking in hostels, using services like CouchSurfing and learning how to earn money, food, and accommodation while on the road. Here are six ways to supplement your finances while travelling abroad.

8 Ways to Earn a Living While Travelling Abroad1. Teach English

English is essentially the universal language throughout the world. As such, job opportunities to teach English exist in countless locations worldwide. Being a native English speaker and passing a certification course is typically the only qualifications needed (though some countries also require a college degree). Depending on the location you decide to teach, you may also receive healthcare benefits and flights costs back to your home country.

2. Working At A Resort

Working at a resort is a very common employment method for people wishing to work overseas. There are resorts all over the world and you could get a job working as a front desk associate, as an activity coordinator or in the restaurant. Working in a resort could be a great way to save some cash while living in a tropical environment.

3. Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO)

VSO has a simple vision of a world without poverty and works towards this vision by sending skilled volunteers from sectors like education, health and business to work with partners who have requested their help.  VSO covers travel expenses, insurance, and daily living expenses for their volunteers.

VSO also has a Youth Volunteering Program for those who do not have the experience to qualify for a primary volunteer opportunities.

4. Work as Crew on a Boat

Imagine living on a yacht or a sailboat, going wherever the wind takes you and spending weeks, months or even years exploring tropical islands and sun-soaked shores.

There are many boat owners who love to take large voyages and will hire you on to work on the boat in exchange for accommodation, food and the chance to sail the seven seas. Some might ask for a basic amount of seafaring knowledge, but others will likely be willing to train you in the art of swabbing the deck and hoisting the main sails. As long as you don’t suffer from seasickness and can get along with people in a confined space for long periods of time, this can be an exhilarating way to see the world.

5. Become a Diving Instructor

Gaining a diving instructor qualification will give you a great opportunity to work in many gorgeous beach locations all over the world and it pays decent money too. Your daily routine will consist of taking travellers on underwater expeditions and hanging out on the beach, with no doubt some partying mixed in there.

Whether diving becomes a lifelong passion or just a way to stay on that idyllic Thai island for a little bit longer, this is a great job that will enable you to make money while you travel.

 6WWOOF

World Wide Organization of Organic Farms (WWOOF) is a program where you can volunteer to work organic farms in numerous counties around the world. It works by providing food and housing in exchange for working 4-6 hours per day at an organic farm. The rest of your day is open to explore and discover the sights and activities of the country you’re in. Keep in mind that only food and accommodation is covered, so other travel expenses are still your responsibility. I have friends who have worked with WWOOF for 6 months in Australia and joke the Australian economy would collapse without all the travellers there working in farms.

8 Ways to Earn a Living While Travelling Abroad27. Peace Corps

Joining the Peace Corps requires a two-year commitment to live and work in a developing country. There are many sectors to work in, such as business, community development, education, environment, agriculture, and health among others.

There are many benefits to gain from working with the Peace Corps. Housing and living allowances, student loan assistance, paid vacation days, a stipend of $8,000 upon commitment completion and full medical and dental coverage are just some of the benefits. The Peace Corps is a real option for someone wanting to see the world and make a viable living at the same time.

8. Be A Blogger Or Freelance Work Online

Digital nomads are people who can work anywhere as long as they have a laptop and internet connection. From blogging, affiliate marketing and freelancing there are numerous ways to start earning money online.

Being a digital nomad is still a job, same as any other, but you will be your own boss and your success will be proportionate to the amount of work you put into it. If you’re curious to see how we work while travelling the world, keep reading to the end of this post and click the link!

So How Will You See the World?

Once you see that affordable travel experiences are possible, it’s tough to justify the same old excuses for not doing anything about it.

Resisting change is human nature and it’s so easy to not take action out of fear and the unknown. Wanting consistency and comfort is the norm, but growth, change and evolution only happens when we thrust ourselves out of that comfort zone we’ve created for ourselves.
